Wood pellets are cylindrical pressings made under high pressure from natural residual wood
or untreated wood shavings. According the ÖNORM 7135
they have a diameter of 6 mm. Pellets are between 10 and 40 mm long.
The natural lignin contained within wood provides the pressed body with sufficient cohesion.
No harmful additives are required.
Environmentally responsible manufacture from locally grown timbers, short haulage lines and packaging
require little energy, compared to fossil fuels.
Wood (biomass) is a sustainable raw material that binds the same amount of CO2
as is released during its combustion. Consequently, pellets are a CO2 neutral fuel.
Increasing use of biomass can make a lasting contribution to a reduction of the greenhouse effect.
ENERGY DENSITY – VOLUME
Compression under pressure achieves a material density of approx. 1.2 kg/dm³. Consequently, pellets have a higher density than wood. The binding under pressure results from substances that occur naturally in wood, such as lignin and is partially supported by adding water steam.
The poured weight is approx. 650 kg/m³.
With 3200 kWh per poured cubic meter, the energy content is three to four times as high as wood chippings.
Pelletising can therefore achieve savings in terms of the silo and transport required. The energy contents of 2 kg pellets corresponds to 1 litre of fuel oil.
QUALITY
Pellets are a clean and natural fuel with a very low residual moisture content. As a result, they offer a particularly high net calorific value and leave little ash after combustion.
Pellets are subject to strict quality criteria laid down for wood pressings. They must be in their natural state and free from all additives or contaminants.
Product and manufacture are constantly checked for purity and quality.
PROPERTIES
The dimensions for pellets made as primary stove fuel have been closely specified. Therefore, this fuel can be automatically transported to the combustion point subject to the selected output.
A relatively large surface area ensures that pellets are easy to ignite and offer excellent combustion characteristics for heating with particularly clean combustion.
